A narrow, twisting road weaves through the valley, a thin stream of black-top separating fields, trees and rivers. The the clouds and sky are reflected in the polished paint and chrome, providing a kaleidoscope effect against the golds and greens of the valley. The road swings up to run right along the ridge-crest and other motorcars in British green, Italian red and German silver are visible as they negotiate the near-by roads. The snarl of a vintage DOHC six cylinder merges with the cat-like howl of a four-cam V12. Washington's Olympic Peninsula was once again the playground of the 1998 BMW Seattle Classic Motorcar Rally.

The Victorian splendor of Port Townsend provided a home-base for the BMW Seattle Classic Motorcar Rally. Manresa Castle, built as a European chateau and home to business magnet and later, Jesuit priests, offered unique accommodations for rally participants.

Using both Monte Carlo and time-speed-distance (TSD) rallies, the weekend of driving was a true sporting event. Vintage rally rules were observed. Over 400 miles were covered, however each day of rallying included regular breaks for participant comfort and sight-seeing.

Special guests for the weekend were Dr. Richard 'Dick' Buckingham and his brother, Steve. Dick is an active vintage racer and founding member of the Society of Vintage Racing Enthusiasts (SOVREN). He has won CCCA and Pebble Beach honors for his restorations and actively campaigns vintage racecars. As our guest speaker for the Saturday evening banquet, Dick shared his hands-on perspective regarding collector cars and vintage racing.

Jay Lamm, automotive author, editor and enthusiast brought his '67 Alfa GTV from California and served as guest speaker for Friday's banquet. Jay's honest affection for old cars, twisty roads and good company were perfect company. From his service with Sports Car International, Autoweek and many other publications, his remarks to the faithful were filled with personal reflections, including the 'Lamm rally jinx.'

The BMW Seattle Classic Motorcar Rally offered the camaraderie and competition of fine sporting motorcars with the natural wonders of Washington's Olympic Peninsula. All Rally proceeds benefit the nonprofit College Planning Network, raising over $8,000 in 1998 to assist individuals seeking higher education opportunities. It was an unforgettable weekend for those who join us in Port Townsend.
